Did you know that HJWA has a Jackson Ward community garden located next to Sixth Mount Zion Baptist Church at Duval and Chamberlayne? Volunteers have enjoyed planting, watering, and harvesting vegetables this summer, and our fall plantings included lettuce, arugula, kale, and collards. Students from VCU along with Sara Barton, Learning Garden Coordinator from the Office of Sustainability, recently helped put our garden “to bed” for the winter. Newly planted carrots, spinach and beets will get an early start in the spring, and the greens may “overwinter”. If you are interested in knowing more about the garden, contact Mary Beth Blinn at blinnrmb@gmail.com. Many thanks to Sixth Mount Zion Baptist Church for allowing us to use their garden beds and to Lea and Monty Gibson who got the project started in spring, 2020.
